We’re delighted to announce the first live engagement of the Astrotourism Community of Practice, a vibrant space for collaboration, learning, and co-creation. This inaugural session will take place on Discord on Thursday, 16 October 2025, and will focus on a timely and transformative theme: Astrotourism and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Astrotourism is more than stargazing, it’s a powerful tool for sustainable development. From preserving dark skies and cultural heritage to empowering rural economies and promoting environmental stewardship, astrotourism intersects with multiple SDGs in meaningful ways. This session will explore those intersections, with examples of astronomy-based tourism initiatives that contribute to inclusive growth, education, and community resilience.
The live engagement is open to all members of the community, whether you’re a seasoned practitioner, a curious newcomer, or someone working in tourism, education, conservation, or science communication. We especially welcome those who wish to share their work, ideas, or experiences. Participants are invited to prepare a slide or two, present a case study, or simply contribute insights during the discussion.
This is not just a webinar, it’s a conversation. A chance to connect with others who are passionate about using astronomy to make a difference. The session will also highlight resources, training opportunities, and upcoming initiatives within the broader Astrotourism for Development flagship.

- You will be able to enter the session at the scheduled time.
How does a Discord session work
- Once you have clicked on the above link and the session begins, you will join as an ‘audience member’ by default.
- In order to speak, you will need to raise your hand – click the raised hand button in the bottom left of your action bar.
- A moderator will approve your request and invite you to the Stage where you can speak.
- To exit the stage, press the “Exit Quietly” button in the bottom right of the action bar. You will return to being an audience member.
